Field Names

Inspired by the Borgue Area Field Names project, I’ve started collecting field-names in the east of Galloway and in Dumfriesshire. I have started with the parishes whose place-names I’m currently surveying: Terregles, Troqueer, New Abbey. However, I’m also looking at Kirkgunzeon and Urr as I grew up around there, in Upper Nithsdale, and at field-names around Annan for the Annan History Town project.

If you know the names of any of the fields in these areas, or know of anyone that does, please get in touch by emailing me at colinpmac.cm [@] gmail.com or by leaving a comment below. You can also find me on Twitter @dgplacenames. I will share the information here and pass it on to the folks at Borgue.org, who also host the Galloway and Carrick Place-Names map.

It would be nice to visit folk and look over the map together, but in light of the recent spike in COVID cases I don’t think that would be wise. For now, the research would involve a chat on the phone after which I would post out a map for you to annotate.
