  • Barr 1807 Aaron Arrowsmith – Map of Scotland constructed from original materials [South East section] [EMS.s.253]

Element: G bàrr ‘hill, hill-top, rounded head-like feature, top’

This name only appears on Arrowsmith’s map. It is located roughly where Little Barr is shown on other maps. Little Barr is on record from 1587-1845. It is likely that this name is referring to Little Barr, rather than an independent settlement. The precise location is unclear. Little Barr is sometimes shown right on the coast where Burnfoot is, and sometimes further inland.

This entry is still in draft and has yet to be proofed. There are links to the sources of historical forms of the name, where spellings can be checked.
